Innsbruck
Nicknamed the “Capital of the Alps” and nestled amongst so much natural beauty, this breathtaking city offers a uniqueness of history and culture while not forgetting its stunning natural surroundings.
Stroll through the streets to fully explore the Baroque and Gothic architecture that is in abundance in the Old Town. The Goldenes Dachl (Golden Roof) is Innsbruck’s most famous landmark, situated in the heart of the historic Old Town (Altstadt). Completed in 1500, the roof was decorated with 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles for Emperor Maximilian I to mark his wedding to Bianca Maria Sforza. The building has reigned over medieval houses and sheltered arcades for over 500 years.
Take the Nordkette Cable Car from the city centre to reach the Seegrube or Hafelekar in as little as 20 minutes. At 2,000 and 2,269 metres above sea level they both will afford you some spectacular views over the valley and the surrounding mountains. Once you have finished admiring the views you can take one of the many hiking trails for an invigorating walk. There is one to suit all levels.
Why not discover Innsbruck’s Imperial past with a tour of the 16th Century Ambras Castle. This imposing Castle shows off its beautiful Art and Renaissance interior design in a fabulous setting of extensive gardens. The Chamber of Art and Curiosities, surely one of the most unusual and compelling collections of curios you’re likely to see is not to be missed.
